Manifest Destiny and The Growing Nation Summary

Manifest Destiny and the Growing Nation summary

Robles, Jack, Sam, and Luis

Louisiana- It all started started with the Louisiana purchase, which was the united state's first chance to expand the country drastically. Louisiana was given to Spain after the French and Indian war, but it was first claimed by France. The United States wanted to buy the port city of New Orleans for a price of 7.5 Million Dollars. However France was on the brink of war with Great Britain, so rather then loose it to them, and also risk having his men killed, he sold it to the United States for 15 million dollars, on the date of April 30, 1803. Some people where very happy that they had expanded their country at about 2-3 cents and acre. However other people thought it was a bad idea, they thought that it would be too much land to govern. Nonetheless late in 1803 the Senate ratified the Louisiana purchase.

Florida- After buying Louisiana president Thomas Jefferson set his sight on Florida. Spain controlled Florida in the late 1500s. But by the 1800s Florida had a very wide variety of people there which consisted of Seminole Indians, Spanish colonist, English traders, and run away slaves. A majority of the south east United States population wanted Florida because the slaves could escape and run away and hide in Florida. In 1804 Jefferson sent 2 diplomats to try and buy Florida from Spain. As time passed Spain's control over Florida weakened as it was continuously harassed by Seminole Indians and ex-slaves. In 1818 President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson(The hero of the battle of New Orleans) to invade Florida with 1700 troops. He was told that he can chase Seminole Indians from Georgia into Florida, but that he couldn't invade the Spanish colonists. After Spain got defeated they demanded that they call Jackson back to Washington and be punished for his illegal actions. Monroe sent a message to Spain saying “either govern Florida properly or get out”. Equally fearful of war Spain decided to pull out of Florida and now the United States controlled but in exchange gave up Texas for it and also they gave them 5 million dollars in settlers' claims.

Texas- Americans living in the south wanted Texas for its valuable cotton fields. Moses Austin, a banker and business man. He later died and his son Stephen took his father's dream which was to start his own American colony in Texas. Stephen got to Texas just as Mexico declared its independence from Spain. The settlers had to agree to certain terms which where to become Mexican citizens and join the Catholic church. Austin agreed to these terms and by 1827 had attracted about 300 families. By 1830 there where about 25,000 American settlers in Mexico, which greatly outnumbered the 4000 Mexicans there. Soon tensions grew between the two ethnic groups. The settlers had many complaints which sparked the rebellion in Texas who where lead by William Travis.

The Alamo- In late Feb. 1836 most of Santa Anna's army (the Mexican general) arrived in San Antonio Texas. San Antonio was defended about 180 American settlers including 8 Tejanos (Texans of Mexican decent). Davy Crockett and his men took over an old mission called the Alamo. Commanding with Crockett was William Travis and James Bowie. For 12 days Mexicans attacked the Alamo with cannon balls and 4000 troops. On March 6 1836 the fight had ended and every single of the Alamo's defenders has been killed and the ones that survived where executed where they stood.

Texas wins its independence- As Santa Anna and his army had slaughtered the defenders of the Alamo. Sam Houston strategy was to retreat east and hope Santa Anna would push east and drag him deep into Texas to make it harder for Santa Anna to supply his army. Houston's strategy worked perfectly. In April Santa Anna caught up with Houston in San Jacinto River. Late in the afternoon Houston's army ambushed them and they were yelling “Remember the Alamo!”. Santa Anna fled and was captured the next day in exchange for his freedom he ordered all his troops out of Texas and Texas had won its independence and was later named the Lone star republic and was now its own country. It stayed like that for 10 years until accepted into the united states in 1845.

The war with Mexico- After Texas became a state all that good fortune turned sour as the US went to war with Mexico. A group of settlers arive in California and decide to rebel. Also the united states sent an army west and took New Mexico and land west of that. Then deiced to attack Mexico leading the army was a man named Zach Taylor. As 6000 troops took the mexican city of Monterrey. General Santa Anna stoped them with 20000 troops. In February 1847 the 2 armies met in Buena Vista after 2 days of fighting the mexicans retreated south. Then the US attacked the Capital city known as Mexico city defended by 1100 troops. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war saying that the US gets all of the land north of mexico and gave Mexico 15 million dollars.
